The NRFG – Committed to Trust, Quality, and Accountability

Home

The NRFG (Stichting het Nederlands Register voor Functionarissen voor Gegevensbescherming "Dutch Register for Data Protection Officers Foundation") is a quality register for Data Protection Officers (DPOs). The register helps clarify the requirements for this role and strengthens the position of DPOs. To ensure its independence, the register is managed by the NRFG Foundation.

What is the purpose of the register?

The register was established to enhance the quality and position of Data Protection Officers (DPOs). It contributes to:

  • Strengthening the quality and independence of the DPO;
  • Clarifying job requirements, based on the rules of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation);
  • Transparency and oversight, making it clear who is working as a DPO and what experience and expertise they have.

Why a register for Data Protection Officers (DPOs)?

Protecting personal data is a crucial responsibility for any organization that handles such data. However, research and parliamentary questions show that many companies and institutions do not fully comply with privacy legislation. DPOs play a key role in this, but they often lack sufficient resources or a strong position to effectively monitor compliance. That’s why the Minister for Legal Protection initiated a national register for DPOs in 2024. This register supports the professionalization of the DPO role and provides clarity where the GDPR sometimes falls short.

The Netherlands takes the lead

Research by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), among others, shows that the DPO role is often not optimally fulfilled across Europe. The Netherlands is taking a proactive lead with the NRFG: a new foundation for knowledgeable, well-positioned, and effective DPOs. Together, we ensure better safeguards for privacy and data protection in the Netherlands.
